The city of Midland Texas, the seat of Midland County and also has part of its land in Martin County. It was founded in 1881 due to the fact that it was halfway between El Paso and Fort Worth on the Texas and Pacific Railroad. At the time of its establishment, it was called Midway Station. There was already a town named Midway, Texas, and so the city changed its name to Midland in 1884 when the post office came to town. By 1890, it was one of the most important cattle shipping centers in Texas. Oil was discovered in the area, an Midland was the de facto administrative center of West Texas oil fields. There was another oil boom in the 1940s, and yet another in the 1970s, in the middle of the oil crisis in the United States. Midland is the town in which former First Lady Laura Bush was raised.
