In 1844, the families of John King and his wife became the first settlers in what is now known as Lewisville, Texas, while his son Augustus G. King and his family and friends settled on the west side of the land grant. They named this settlement Holford’s Prairie after two of the settlers, James and John Holford. After the Hedgcoxe War, the land records were in disarray, and Basdeal Lewis bought Holford’s Prairie and named it after himself in 1853. Lewisville is in Denton County.
