Situated on the north bank of the Rio Grande in South Texas, the city of Laredo is the county seat of Webb County. It is directly across the border from Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas, Mexico. It was established in 1755 as a villa and was, for a brief period of time, the capital of the Republic of the Rio Grande. Located in the Spanish colony of New Spain, It was named Villa de San Agustin de Laredo, named in honor of both Saint Augustine and Laredo, Cantabria in Spain. There are four international bridges in this, the oldest border crossing between Mexico and the United States as well as the largest inland port of entry.
