The county seat of Kleberg County, Texas is Kingsville, which was located on the route of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway in 1904. It is named in honor of Richard King, steamboat entrepreneur, riverboat man, and founder of King Ranch, where livestock is raised. The town fathers reached an agreement with the railroad for headquarters to be located in Kingsville. In 1920, oil was discovered nearby, at the same time natural gas was found. The next year, the residents built a cotton mill, and in 1925, South Texas Teachers College, which eventually became Texas A&M University at Kingsville, was established there.
