rving, Texas is in Dallas County. The settlement was originally named Gorbit from 1889 until 1894, when the name was changed to Kit when the townsite was moved in order to be on the anticipated route of a railroad. It turned out that the route was not what the settlers thought it was going to be, and in 1902, Otto Schulze and Otis Brown founded a third townsite, which they named Irving. Though it’s not a certainty, it is widely believed that Otis’s wife, Netta, was a fan of Washington Irving and influenced her husband to name it in honor of the renowned author. On August 2, 1985, Delta Air Lines Flight 191 en route from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Los Angeles encountered bad weather as it passed over the area and crashed in Irving when it was hit with a microburst, about a mile away from the runway. It slammed into a car and two water tanks killing 136 of the 152 passengers and 11 crew as well as the driver of the car.
