Located in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, the city of Harlingen is in Cameron County. In 1904, a Choctaw man named Lon C. Hill founded the town in order to further his dream of turning the Arroyo Colorado into a commercial waterway. He named the town after the city of Harlingen in the Netherlands. The post office was established that year, and the town began growing. The fledgling agricultural town was incorporated in 1910.
