Galveston, Texas, which is located on Galveston Island in Galveston County, was established as a port in 1825 by the Congress of Mexico, in which country it was situated at that time. The city was the main port of the Texas Navy during the Texas Revolution, and once that war was over, it was the capital of the Republic of Texas. The island ad the town were named in honor of Bernardo de Galvez y Madrid, Count of Galvez in 1785.
