Corsicana, Texas was named in honor of the island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea by Jose Antonio Navarro, a hero of the Texas Revolution, in honor of his late father who was born on that island. The town was created in 1848 specifically to serve as the county seat of the new county of Navarro. The new town was centered close to a log tavern and soon included a courthouse which doubled as a church, meeting house, and a civic center. Corsicana is still the county seat.
