Corpus Christi, Texas is the county seat of Nueces County, though parts of the city extend into Aransas, San Patricio, and Kleberg Counties. It sits on the coast of south Texas, near the Mexican border. The name of the town, Latin for “Body of Christ,” was given to the settlement and its bay in 1519 by Alonso de Pineda, a Spanish explorer. General Zachary Taylor set up camp at the settlement while he and his troops prepared for the war with Mexico. They arrived in July of 1845 and stayed until March of the next year. During the American Civil War, the Battle of Corpus Christi was fought from August 12 through August 18 of 1962 on both land and sea, and while the Union won the sea battle, they were sent running when they landed on the Texas coast.
