Situated in Harris County, Texas, the city of Bellaire is almost entirely residential. It was founded by an Iowan who was president of the South End Land Company, William Baldwin. Baldwin bought a portion of a ranch belonging to William Marsh Rice and was called “Westmoreland Farms,” which was made up of several truck farms. He divided a section in the center of Westmoreland Farms, apportioning it to be residential land for those working the farms. The residential land was named Bellaire. which means “Good Air” due to the breezes which blew through the area. Bellaire became world renowned during Hurricane Rita in 2005, when a bus filled with evacuees from a nursing home in Bellaire caught fire and exploded in the nearby city of Wilmer, killing 24 of the 38 residents and staff on the bus.
