Beaumont, Texas, the county seat of Jefferson County, was settled by Noah and Nancy Tevis in 1824, when they established their farm on the west bank of the Neches River. In 1835, Henry Millard bought up land in the area and laid out a town. He named it Beaumont after his brother-in-law with whom he partnered in business matters. Beaumont grew into first an oil town and then a commercial port and shipbuilding center during World War I.
