Baytown, Texas is in both Harris and Chambers Counties. Settlers started moving into the area in 1822 when Nathaniel Lynch set up a ferry crossing there the an Jacinto River crosses the Buffalo Bayou. Soon, the settlement boasted a small store as well as a sawmill. When the Civil War broke out, a local unit called the Bayland Guards for Confederates Service. That unit later became part of the Second Texas Regiment, fighting at both Vicksburg and Shiloh. In 1916, the first offshore drilling operation in Texas was established the Goose Creek Oilfield, and Baytown became a refinery town, as the town grew largely around that industry. The original ferry is still in operation, and Exxon is still a major employer, with more than ten major petrochemical plants in the area.
