The capital of the state of Texas, Austin, is also the seat of Travis County but is also in Williamson and Hays Counties. In 1839, three years after Texas won its independence from Mexico, the new country established Austin as the capital of the Republic of Texas. The area was known as Waterloo, but it was named in honor of Stephen Austin, known as the Father of Texas, who was that country’s first secretary of state.
