Situated on the Texas Panhandle, the city of Amarillo is the county seat of Potter County as well as having part of the city within Randall County in Texas. Originally named Oneida, It was once known as “the Helium Capital of the World.” It is home to one of the largest meat packing companies in the world and also is the home of the only nuclear weapons assembly facility in the United States. It was renamed Amarillo, which is Spanish for “yellow,” probably due to the carpets of yellow wildflowers which grow in the area during spring and summer. Within ten years of its establishment, Amarillo had become one of the world’s busiest cattle shipping points, prompting several railroad companies had stops in Amarillo, including the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe, and the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. Both oil and gas were discovered there in the early 1900s, and it became home to the Amarillo Helium plant and the Cliffside Gas Field.
