Smyrna, in Rutherford County, Tennessee, was settled in 1855 and incorporated in 1869. During he Civil War, the Smyrna railroad station was between Chattanooga and Nashville. It was named after the ancient Greek city by the same name. During the Civil War, local farmer and Confederate hero Sam Davis, was charged with spying. He was captured November 20, 1863 and was hanged seven days later without giving information to the Yankees.
