The city of Newport is the county seat of Cocke County, Tennessee. Peer Fine started a ferry on the north bank of the French Broad River at the end of the American Revolution, and shortly after that, other settlers began moving to the area. the town of New Port came into existence. In the 1790s, the Gilliand family donated land for a courthouse and town square, and the town of New Port was established. Fine was active in the organization of the State of Franklin. He was also a Revolutionary War soldier and Indian fighter.
