Johnson City, Tennessee is co-located in Washington, Carter, and Sullivan, Counties. In 1769, the man known as Tennessee’s first settler, William Bean, built his cabin near what is now Johnson City.Colonel John Tipton, who was a leader of the anti-secession faction of the state during the State of Franklin movement, established his farm there, and in February of 1788, an armed confrontation between Tipton and his men and men led by John Sevier, who led the Franklin faction. The town was founded in 1856 by Henry Johnson as a railroad depot called Johnson’s Depot. During the Civil War, the town underwent a name change to Haynesville, after Confederate Senator Landon Carter Haynes. As soon as the war was over, it was named Johnson City and founder Henry Johnson was elected as the first mayor in 1870.
