Cleveland Tennessee is situated in Bradley County and is, in fact the county seat. It was named in honor of Colonel Benjamin Cleveland, who was a Revolutionary War hero and who was commander at the Battle of Kings Mountain in that war. Andrew Taylor, who had married an Indian woman, had a log cabin on the land which now houses the post office in downtown Cleveland. Like the rest of the counties in Tennessee, Bradley County was divided as to whether to secede from the Union or not and they voted against the secession. Cleveland was occupied from 1861 to 1863 by the Confederate army, who were quartered in public buildings and churches. They razed the railroad bridge and destroyed the area for miles around. After the war, the townspeople set about rebuilding the town and has since prospered.
