The Tennessee city of Clarksville is the seat of Montgomery County. Named in honor of Revolutionary War hero General George Rogers Clark, it was Tennessee’s first incorporated city. It was settled in 1779 , and in 1785, it was established as a town. Despite frequent Indian attacks, managed not only to survive, but it, in fact, thrived and became a leader in the country’s dark fired tobacco, which was its primary crop.
