Sturgis, the county seat of Meade County, South Dakota, was founded in 1878 as Scooptown due to the fact that most people who lived there “scooped up” pay from nearby Fort Meade. It was later renamed in honor of Union General Samuel Sturgis, a Civil War veteran and commander at the Cavalry Post at Fort Meade, which was the post for virtually every calvary regiment in the United States Army at the time. It is the home of the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the largest motorcycle rally in the world, with hundreds of thousands of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts gathering there from around the globe.
