The city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota is the county seat of Minnehaha County and is also co-located in Lincoln County. It is named for the cascades on the Big Sioux River, upon which it was established. The first documented visit by anyone other than the nomadic Lakota and Dakota Sioux in the area was by Philander Prescott who camped at the falls in December of 1832. It was founded by land speculators who were banking on the railroads and settlers moving through the townsite. There were numerous conflicts between the new settlers and the Indians in the region, and during the Dakota War of 1862, the town was evacuated after two locals were killed because of the conflict. Once abandoned, the townsite was looted and burned. As they returned, Fort Dakota was established in what is not downtown. The town was incorporated in 1876.
