Rapid City, South Dakota, the county seat of Pennington County is named for the nearby Rapid Creek. It is known as the “Gateway to the Black Hills” and is divided by a mountain range, splitting the city into east and west. It was settled in 1874 after the Custer Expedition discovered gold in the Black Hills.
