The city of Pierre is the capital of the state of South Dakota as well as the county seat of Hughes County. The only state capital in the United States which has a sparser population than Pierre is Montpelier, Vermont. It was founded on the Missouri River just opposite Fort Pierre in 1880 and has been the capital since it was accepted into the Union. The fort after which it is named was established by fur trader Pierre Chouteau, Jr. as a replacement for Fort Tecumseh in 1832 as a fort and a trading post.

This blog has an unusual method: every day, the blogger has his computer randomly select altitude and longitude within the continental United States, which process he calls “landing.” He keeps track of the watersheds in which he lands, as well as the towns and writes about those places.
