Incorporated in 1882, the city of Mitchell, South Dakota is the seat of Davison County. It was named after the president of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad, Alexander Mitchell. In 1892, an elaborate building called the Corn Palace was built in order to encourage people to move into the area. The outside of the building, which is now a multi-purpose facility and sports arena, is covered with murals which are made from corn. These murals are redesigned every year with a new theme. The Corn Palace Festival is held at the end of August each year. Other annual events in the building include the Corn Palace Polka Festival and the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo.
