Located 20 miles south of Sioux Falls, the city of Canton, South Dakota is the county seat of Lincoln County. Lewis Hyde was the first visitor to the area, having come through in 1866. He was soon followed by August Linderman, who was the first settler, and within two years, there were 35 people living in Lincoln County. In the summer of 1868, 180 Norwegian settlers made their way across the Big Sioux River and built homes in Canton. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad reached Canton in 1880, providing the town with a growing economy.
