The county seat of Brown County, Aberdeen, South Dakota was settled by the Sioux from the early 1700s to 1879, when four people came into town with three horses, two wagons, and fifteen cattle. Built around the burgeoning railroad system, Aberdeen was plotted in 1881 by the superintendent of the Minneapolis office of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad, Charles Prior, who named it in honor of Aberdeen, Scotland where his boss was born.
