The South Carolina town of Pendleton was founded in 1780 as the county seat of Pendleton County. It is named in honor of Judge Henry Pendleton, who fought in the American Revolutionary War and stayed in South Carolina afterwards. It was originally filled with Scots-Irish veterans of the Revolution, but by 1800, the more aristocratic citizens of the LowCountry built summer homes in the town.
