Myrtle Beach, in Horry County, South Carolina, was sparsely settled in the late 1700s until a hurricane in 1822 drowned 18 members of the Withers family. The remaining residents abandoned their land and moved, leaving the area to return to forest. 60 years later, the settlement was rebuilt and named New Town. In 1899, a railroad came through, bringing new residents. It was named in honor of the Southern Wax Myrtle, which grew in the area.
