The town of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is located on Hilton Head Island in Beaufort County. Often called Hilton Head, it is named after Captain William Hilton who discovered the headland near the mouth of Port Royal Sound and named the island after himself. During the American War Between the States, it was used as an operations base for the Union blockade of southern ports. After the Union occupied the island, literally hundreds of ex-slaves migrated to Hilton Head, and many of them are ancestors of current residents there who are called the Gullah, or Geechee. The Geechee people still keep their own culture and language, an English based creole language with many African words in the language as well.
