The port city of Charleston, South Carolina is the county seat of Charleston County. Originally named Charles Towne in 1670, the name was changed to its current one in 1783. Its nickname, the Holy City, is a reference to the fact that it was the only one of the original colonies which provided religious tolerance, its numerous churches on the cityscape, and the huge number of steeples which populate the skyline.
