The capital of the state of Rhode Island, Providence, which is also the seat of Providence County. It was founded by Roger Williams, the leader of a group of religious exiles from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636. Williams named the area after “God’s merciful Providence,” which he credited with having allowed him to find this hideaway for him and his group to settle.
