The city of Pawtucket, Rhode Island is situated in Providence County and is named for the Algonquian word for “river fall.” In 1671, the first European settler, Joseph Jenckes, moved to the region from Lynn, Massachusetts and bought 60 acres upon which he built a forge and a sawmill. Other settlers soon arrived, and businesses soon appeared all over the area. By the time the Revolutionary War began, Pawtucket was where muskets, anchors, canons, and ships were built. By the 1790s, the dawn of the American Industrial Revolution Pawtucket was a major cotton textile center, and by the 20th century, it was a successful mill town. The toy giant Hasbro is headquartered there.
