The township of Springfield, Pennsylvania is situated within Delaware County. It was recorded as a township in 1686 and settled by Quakers who immigrated to Pennsylvania with William Penn. By 1776, there were 300 people living in Springfield. Mills were started in the township, which was a natural fit due to the numerous water sources in the area. By 1900, it was one of the busiest commercial areas in Pennsylvania. In the first half of the 20th century, farmland was sold off to developers, and Springfield became a largely residential community. The Springfield Mall is a two-level shopping mall and generates much of the commercial dollars in Springfield.
