Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is the capital of that state as well as the seat of Dauphin County. In 1608, Captain John Smith was the first European in the area on a trip from Virginia. In 1719, an English trader by the name of John Harris, Sr. got a land grant of 800 acres and settled there. In 1785, his son, John Jr., laid out the town on his father’s land and named it in honor of his father.
