Salem, Oregon, is the capital of the state and the seat of Marion County and parts of the city extend to Polk County. Although there is a mild dispute as to who, exactly, chose the name for the town, it is indisputable that it comes from the Arabic word “salam,” and the Hebrew word “shalom,” both of which mean peace.
