Named after the city in, Maine, Portland, Oregon is the county seat of Multnomah County and is also in Clackamas and Washington Counties. The two founders of the city, Asa Lovejoy of Boston, Massachusetts and Francis Pettygrove of Portland, Maine each wished to name the area after his own hometown. Unable to come into agreement, they used the age-old coin toss with two out of three tosses won by Pettygrove. That very coin, called the Portland Penny, is displayed in the Oregon Historical Society.
