Gearhart is a city in Clatsop County, Oregon. It lies on flat land on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, making it open to tsunamis due to the lack of high ground. Phillip Gearhart left Independence, Missouri in 1848, bringing his family to Oregon. They arrived in Oregon City and he rented a log cabin on the plains of Clatsop in what was to become Gearhart. The first farmer in the vicinity was Solomon Smith, who married the daughter of the chief of the Clatsop Indians. Gearhart bought squatters rights in the south plains, and had soon bought enough land to encompass what eventually became the city of Gearhart. The railroad arrived in 1889, and in short order, the ferry carrying visitors from Portland connected with the train, to help the city’s economic health.
