Bethany, Oklahoma, in Oklahoma County, was founded by members of the Nazarene Church led by Reverend CB Jernigan, in 1909. The congregation had moved rom Oklahoma City in order to find a one for the Oklahoma Holiness College, which is now known as Southern Nazarene University. It was incorporated in 1910 and named in honor of the town in the New Testament which was the home of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. The town had ordinances making alcohol and tobacco illegal as well s gambling, dancing, cursing, watching movies, and working on the Sabbath. It became a city in 1931. In the meantime, the city has become the headquarters for the International Pentecostal Holiness Church as well as the National Pinto Horse Association.
