Defiance, Ohio is the county seat of Defiance County. Fort Defiance once stood in the same spot upon which the city now sits. In August of 1794, Fort Defiance was built on orders of the General Anthony Wayne during hostilities with the Indians in the area. The blockhouse functioned as a place to stage the Army’s offensives and provide protection at the same time. So sturdy was this blockhouse that Lieutenant John Boyer, who served under General Wayne, once said that the fort could provide protection from “the English, the Indians, and all the devils in hell.” In 1822, the town of Defiance was platted and founded on the site of the fort, and in 1845, it was designated the county seat for the newly created Defiance County. Defiance attained city status in 1881.
