Devils Lake, North Dakota is situated in Ramsey County, and is also its seat. It was originally populated by the Sioux, until they were relocated to the Spirit Lake Reservation. The city gets its name from the name given to it by the Spirit Lake Sioux. The first post office was established in 1882, and it was named Creelsburg, in honor of Lieutenant Heber Creel, who founded it. It was Lieutenant Creel who established and surveyed the town after he separated from the Army. In 1884, the name of the village was changed to City of Devils Lake and later shortened to simply Devils Lake.
