The port city of Wilmington, North Carolina is the seat of New Hanover County. Located on the Cape Fear River, it was settled in 1733 and called New Carthage. It was then renamed New Liverpool, but that was not the last name it carried. It was called New Town, which then morphed into Newton, which became the provincial government for the North Carolina colony. In 1740, the town was incorporated as Wilmington, named after Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington.
