Rocky Mount, North Carolina, is in both Edgecombe and Nash counties. The post office was established in early 1816 at the Tar River falls. The name was taken from a rocky mound at those falls. Rocky Mount Mills, one of the first cotton mills in the state, was founded in 1818. The Raleigh-Tarboro stage route was the closest thing to outside transportation, as the stage passed below Rocky Mount. On Christmas Eve of 1839, the first railroad tracks reached the settlement. It was incorporated as a town in 1867. Bright leaf tobacco was in demand in the 19th century, and the growth of that industry and the effect it had on the town prompted the town's first bank to be built in 1889. Rocky Mount became a city in 1907, after which the city got its first public school, its first daily newspaper, its first library, and its first public hospital.
