Monroe, North Carolina is the county seat of Union County. It was named in honor of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States. It soon became a trading center foe tobacco and other local crops. The first newspaper in the entire county, the Monroe Enquirer, put out its first issue in 1872. In 1909, Ludwig Drums was established in Monroe.
