Haywood County, North Carolina is where you will find the town of Maggie Valley. It was named in honor of a 14-year old girl named Maggie Setzer, who was the daughter of the first postmaster in town, Jack Setzer. Mr. Setzer ran the post office from his home. The Postal Service asked him to submit a name for the town, but the first three were rejected because there were other towns in North Carolina with them. He submitted the names of each of his daughters, Cora, Mettie, and Maggie Mae as well as Jonathan Creek, which was the name of the creek that ran through the Setzer property. On May 10, 1904, Mr. Setzer heard back from the Postal Service with their decision: The official name of the mountain settlement would be Maggie.
