The city of Baraboo is the largest city in and the county seat of Sauk County, Wisconsin. It was the original home of Ringling Brothers circus. The area was settled in 1838 by Abe Wood, who originally called it the village of Adams. It became the county seat after a drawn-out battle with a nearby village, Reedsburg, in 1846, and changed its name to Baraboo after the nearby river. It is frequently referred to as Circus City. It was finally incorporated as a city in 1882. Aside from the opulent Al. Ringling Theater, which still exists, it also sports the living history museum called Circus World, which boasts largest library of circus literature as well as a large collection of circus wagons and cages. The city of Baraboo is almost entirely within the town of Baraboo.
