The county seat of Fayette County, West Virginia is Fayetteville. Situated on the rim of the New River Gorge, it was founded by Revolutionary War veteran Abraham Vandal, who was a farmer. Originally named Vandalia, the town’s name was changed to Fayetteville in 1873 in honor of Marquis de Lafayette, who was also a Revolutionary War hero. During the Civil War, the town was fought over four different times and was occupied by both the North and the South at various points. Once a coal mining town, Fayetteville is now almost exclusively a tourist town, boasting fishing, white water rafting, and rock climbing.
