The city of Kingston, Tennessee is the county seat of Roane County. It was settled in 1792 as Fort Southwest Point, where the namesake of the town, Major Robert King, was stationed, and incorporated as a city in 1799. In 1807, Kingston was the state capital of Tennessee for one day: September 21. This situation was because of an agreement with the Cherokee who were told that if they gave up the land which is now Roane County, Kingston would be the capital of Tennessee. Once that promise was kept, at the end of the day. Knoxville became the state capital again.
