De Smet, South Dakota is the county seat of Kingsbury County. It was platted in 1880 and named for Father Pierre-Jean De Smet, a Belgian Catholic Jesuit priest who was active in missionary work among the Indians in the 19th century. It was he who persuaded Sioux Chief Sitting Bull to negotiate with the federal government for the 1868 Treaty of Laramie. The priest had locations in Idaho and Montana named for him as well. De Smet was the homestead of the family of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the Little House on the Prairie series.
