Cottage Grove, Oregon is in Lane County. The first permanent settlers arrived in Cottage Grove by way of the Oregon Trail and the Applegate Trail in 1848. The first post office was established in 1855 in the home of the postmaster, Greenbery Pearce. That post office would be moved to what is now Saginaw in 1863, and again to the west bank of the Coast Fork Willamette River in the southwestern part of the city in the late 1860s. Gold was discovered in the Bohemia Mountains, east of Cottage Grove, in 1863 and carried the local economy until the 1920s. In 1872, the railroad arrived, and in 1909, the Pacific Highway was built. In 1957, I-5, which was part of the original federal interstate system, came through town. The Chambers Railroad Bridge is the only remaining fully covered railroad bridge west of the Mississippi. It was restored by the City in 2011.
