The city of New Albany is situated in both Franklin and Licking Counties. The town of New Albany was founded in 1837 when it was laid out by Nobel Landon and William Yantes. Noble was born in Connecticut and had lived in northern Vermont before coming to Licking County by way of New York. Many German immigrants moved into the area in the 1800s, many fleeing the path of devastation being blazed by the War Between the States. In 1856, New Albany, with a population of 50, was incorporated as a village. The Heischman family arrived from the upper Shenandoah Valley, which had been laid to ruin, and the marriages and offspring, as well as the immigration patterns, helped to populate New Albany. The Great Depression continued the inflow of new residents as people looking for farm work and cheap housing moved into the area en masse. Les Wexner's clothing companies, which include or have included Victoria's Secret, Bath & Body Works, Abercrombie & Fitch, The Limited, Lane Bryant, and Lerner New York, were started and some are still headquartered there. In 2011, the City of New Albany was certified.
